Data & Privacy Policy

1. Our Philosophy: Privacy by Design

Cuento is built on a Zero-PII (Personally Identifiable Information) model. We believe you should be able to tell stories without leaving a digital footprint.

2. Public Content & Narrative Integrity

This is a collaborative storytelling environment. To maintain the integrity and readability of the world for all players, in-game content — your roleplay posts, character sheets, and wanted character entries — is considered part of the shared narrative. By registering on any Cuento site, you grant the platform a perpetual license to retain and display this content to ensure story continuity, even after you leave the site. Upon account archival, this content is anonymised: your username is replaced by a generic identifier (e.g., The_Nameless_One).

The Severance: Upon archival of your user account, we permanently destroy the technical link between your login credentials and your content. Once this link is severed, the action is irreversible — we cannot re-link posts to a new account because the connection no longer exists in our database.

All non-game data — posts in general (out-of-character) topics, user settings, and similar personal content — is not anonymised and retained. It is deleted permanently when you use the Data Wipe Tool described in section 3.

3. Private Messages & Full Data Erasure

Your private correspondence and personal data belong to you. We provide a unique mechanism for you to permanently erase all of it, even after you leave the platform.

Recovery Codes: Upon registration, the system generates a set of unique recovery codes. Store these safely — they are your only cryptographic proof of ownership of your private data.

Default Retention: If you archive your account, or if your account is banned, your DMs remain accessible to your conversation partners by default to preserve history. The link to your login credentials is severed, but the messages themselves are kept until you choose to wipe them.

The Data Wipe Tool: Using your recovery code, you can trigger a permanent, irreversible deletion of all non-game data associated with your account — at any time, even without logging in, and without requiring approval from site administration or other participants. This includes:

The following in-game content is not deleted — it is anonymised instead, to preserve narrative continuity for other players:

4. User Responsibility & Verification

Because we do not collect emails or real-world identity markers, we have no way to verify your identity via traditional support channels.

If you lose both your password and your recovery codes, we cannot recover your private messages or delete your data for you. While administrators may be able to reset a password, doing so without the original keys will result in the permanent loss of all previous DMs.

5. Technical Security

Your DMs are protected using cryptographically safe private keys. Your password, recovery codes, private keys, and the content of your private messages are never stored in plain text.

Neither the administrators nor the developers of the site can recover this information. This ensures that your private messages remain confidential between you and your intended interlocutor.

6. GDPR & Regulatory Compliance

By removing the link between your login credentials and your content (anonymisation), Cuento ensures compliance with the core principles of the GDPR and CPPA regarding personal information protection.

The Data Wipe Tool specifically fulfils your Right to Erasure, allowing you to permanently remove all non-game personal data even after your relationship with the platform has ended.
